Designing Homes That Work Better for the People Who Live in Them

Great design isn't just about creating beautiful spaces. It's about understanding how people live, what they value, and how their homes can better support their lives.

For Dave Kangas, that philosophy has guided more than three decades of residential design work in here Whatcom County. Whether he's helping a family reimagine a kitchen, designing an accessible bathroom, or transforming an entire home through remodeling, his approach begins the same way: listen carefully, collaborate openly, and never lose sight of the people who will ultimately live in the space.

"Our job is to help clients achieve their vision," Dave says. "Good design starts with understanding what matters to them."

A Passion That Started Early

Long before he became a professional designer, Dave was fascinated by houses.

Growing up in Michigan, he spent hours studying home plan books, sketching floor plans, and imagining how spaces could be improved. While other kids filled notebooks with superheroes or race cars, Dave was drawing homes.

"My sketchbooks when I was a kid were all floor plans," he says. "It's always felt like something that was natural to me."

Like many future designers, Dave can point to a few early influences. One of the biggest was This Old House and its legendary host, Bob Vila. Watching homes being deconstructed and rebuilt sparked a curiosity that never really left.

"Seeing how houses worked and how they could be transformed always fascinated me," he says.

That curiosity eventually became a career.

Why Remodeling Matters

While new construction starts with a blank slate, remodeling requires a different set of skills.

Every existing home presents unique opportunities and constraints. Successful remodeling involves understanding how a family lives, identifying pain points, and finding creative ways to improve function while respecting the character of the home.

For Dave, that's what makes remodeling so rewarding.

The best projects aren't simply about updating finishes or following trends. They're about creating spaces that genuinely improve daily life.

That could mean opening up a kitchen to better support family dinners or making a home accessible for someone who wants to age comfortably in place.

Remodeling isn't always about changing a house. It's about improving how people live every day.

What Makes Good Design?

Ask Dave what defines good design, and his answer has less to do with aesthetics and more to do with listening.

One of the most important skills a designer can develop is the ability to appreciate someone else's preferences—even when they differ from your own.

"The goal isn't to create the home I would want," he explains. "The goal is to create the home that's right for our clients."

That mindset creates a collaborative process where homeowners feel heard and respected. It allows the design team to uncover what matters most and develop solutions that reflect each client's priorities, lifestyle, and personality.

Listening, collaboration, creativity, and a willingness to explore new ideas all play a role in creating spaces that feel both beautiful and deeply personal.

The Design-Build Difference

One of the reasons Dave enjoys working at A1DesignBuild is the company's integrated design-build approach.

Rather than separating design and construction into different organizations, A1's designers, project managers, and craftspeople work together throughout the entire process.

The result is a higher level of communication, accountability, and continuity.

Dave describes it as a form of "extreme ownership."

From the earliest design conversations through final construction, he remains actively involved in each project.

"I tell clients that when we're done with design, they're not seeing the last of me," he says. That ongoing involvement allows the design intent to remain intact while giving clients a trusted advocate throughout the construction process.

The Most Rewarding Moment

Ask Dave about the best part of his job and he doesn't talk about floor plans, software, or construction details.

He talks about people.

Specifically, he talks about the moment a client sees their completed project for the first time.

After months of planning, decision-making, and construction, there is often a brief pause as homeowners take in their new space.

"They just stand there for a moment," Dave says. "There's this collective exhale. Like, we did it."

For him, that moment never gets old.

Still Inspired After Three Decades

Even after more than thirty years in design, Dave remains as curious and engaged as he was when he was sketching floor plans as a kid.

He still owns many of the books that inspired him growing up. He still studies historic home designs. He still appreciates the efficiency and thoughtful planning found in homes built a century ago.

"We've focused so much on bigger and better," he says. "But there's a lot we can learn from homes that were smaller, simpler, and incredibly well designed."

That blend of experience and curiosity continues to shape his work every day. As does a quote taped to his computer monitor that captures his mindset:

"Be brave enough to suck at something new."

It's a reminder that growth requires curiosity and a bit of bravery, creating homes that work better for the people who live in them.
